                                      Rotary District 1060

                                   Annual Conference, Torquay 29 - 31 October 2010

As a district we've always had a good turnout for our Annual Conference. It is appreciated, however, that the average age profile of our members has increased dramatically over the years and indeed, the number of Rotarians in the district has fallen. In an effort to make it more attractive for Rotarians and their partners to attend our Annual Conference and to give support to our District Governor it has been agreed we will try to encourage more attendees by offering transport from all over the district to and from Torquay. There are various options open to us, and these are as follows:

1. Travel down on the Thursday prior to conference returning on the Monday morning following conference.

2. Travel down on Friday of the conference, returning on the Sunday afternoon following the last plenary session.

3. Travel down on Friday of the conference, returning on the Monday morning following conference.

It is anticipated that the return journey cost will be in the region of £30 per head. This is felt to be a reasonable price and it is doubtful, and even with the most economical car, that the return journey could be accomplished for less than £100 expended in petrol.

The advantage of using a coach, is that it avoids the stress of having to travel such a long way down a very busy motorway and the return on the Sunday afternoon, which invariably clashes with the end of the school half term. If Rotarians and their partners were to stay over for a longer weekend and return on the Monday then they will be able to enjoy the Fellowship of a Halloween party on the Sunday evening after the conclusion of our Annual Conference.

As the District Logistics Officer. I would appreciate it if those interested could please contact me so that I can plan accordingly. I envisage that they will that subject to their being set sufficient numbers that there will be various pickup points across the whole of our district and that the coaches will arrive in Torquay in mid-afternoon and return on the Sunday afternoon at approximately 15:00 hours, and on the Monday morning at 10:00 hours. The coaches would take passengers to their various hotels from where they would be picked up for the return journey.

I do hope that you will support this venture, which has been designed to assist you, Rotarians and partners, so that you can attend the annual conference and have an enjoyable weekend without the hassle of a stressful drive.

I can be contacted either by e-mail, robin.jones 8@btInternet.com,(this is preferable) or by telephone on 056 0149 8821.

                 DISTRICT 1060 FOUNDATION BULLETIN

Eleventh Bulletin

The end of the Rotary year is rapidly approaching and I would like to thank all those Clubs who have got involved in Foundation projects this year. Please remember to get your contributions sent off to District for Foundation Annual Giving, Polio Eradication and Thanks for Life. If you are unsure about the difference then please ask me but all need to be paid to the District by cheque made out to Rotary District 1060 with a note as to how you want the money allocated.

Thanks For Life Project and Polio Eradication

There is still money coming in from the Thanks for Life Project and if your Club have not yet sent off the money you raised then please do this now so that it is counted in this years figures. There is of course still time to support your District Governor Lorna when she jumps out of a plane for this worthy cause. What a way to finish her year and hopefully she will still be in a suitable condition to hand over to David Butler. All the money she raises is for Thanks for Life and she needs your support either as individuals or as a Club. I would like to get every Club giving something towards the Bill Gates Polio Eradication Challenge before the end of this Rotary Year.

Rotary Annual Giving

The majority of Annual Giving for Foundation comes in during the last 2 months and District needs to receive your contributions by early June at the latest to enable the money to be processed and allocated this year.

Rotary Alumni

A quick reminder that we are trying to trace all the Rotary Alumni in District if we can. I have had a few people contact me since the last issue and if you are in contact with anybody that qualifies as a Rotary Alumni then please let me know.

Group Study Exchanges

Volunteers are required to be Area Coordinators for the GSE Team visit from Brazil. If your Club is interested in getting involved with this then please see if you can get someone from your Club to take on this job. With 8 areas we need 8 coordinators but there will be less work to do and it only lasts for a few months as the visit is completed by November. If you are interested or for more details please get back to me. Remember to see a presentation by the GSE Team when they return from New Zealand.

Matching and Simplified Grants

I am pleased to report that there should be a lot more money available to support your projects next year. Thanks to the great increase in contributions 3 years ago we have $10,000 allocated to District Simplified Grants. I am also pleased to report that the Foundation investments at RI have improved much more than they were expecting and subject to approval there should be a lot more money available to support Matching Grants as well. Please get your applications sorted out with District and placed early in the new Rotary year as I am sure that there is going to be a lot of interest from other Clubs.

END POLIO NOW:  Every Club is being asked to raise funds
